check the report:
Rapper Beanie Sigel is in surgery Friday morning following a shooting in Pleasantville where he and another man were injured.
Sigel was shot in the torso and transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center' city campus, where he was in critical condition, his attorney has said. Police confirmed the victim as Dwight Grant, which is Sigel's real name.
Police arrived at the intersection of Spruce and Somerset avenues at about 9:25 a.m., and found a Sigel shot in the torso.
Police believe Sigel had been at a family house. Sigel's wife Michelle is the daughter of local Imam Umar Salahuddin.
When Salahuddin's son appeared in Atlantic County Superior Court on a gun charge, Sigel came to court to speak on his behalf.
A man was taken into custody after police chased a car that appeared to be related to the shooting. His name has not been released pending charges.
Sigel, 40, was taken to the Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he was undergoing surgery. His condition was not immediately available.
A second man was injured at the scene, but not shot, according to police. He refused medical treatment.
He was released to a Philadelphia area halfway house Aug. 14, after serving a two-year sentence in federal prison for tax evasion. He has been on home confinement since Sept. 25, but where that is could not be released, according to a spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons. Sigel was wearing a monitoring bracelet which went off when it was cut off at the hospital, according to authorities.
Sigel is a Philadelphia native and former protege of rap superstar Jay-Z, until the two had a falling out. His records have sold more than a million copies. He previously served time in prison on weapons charges and was acquitted of attempted murder in a 2003 Philadelphia shooting.
In 2006, he was shot during a robbery in Philadelphia.
